About the
West Region Blueway  & Trail System

Establish a defined blueway system. Build more trails.

These two priorities from our 2019 Comprehensive Master Plan are at the heart of the West Region Blueway & Trail System and were developed based on thousands of requests we’ve received from park users, stakeholders, and the public at large.

We’re delighted to respond by leading the development of this new trail system that will allow residents and visitors to more easily explore the amazing natural resources and communities of western Hamilton County by water, on foot, on bikes, or other means of non-motorized travel.

The West Region Blueway & Trail System will also extend the highly popular Great Miami Riverway through western Hamilton County and four of our parks to connect with land and water trails along the Ohio River. Users will be able to create their own unique outdoor experiences with trip lengths ranging from a few hours to several days.

The Master Plan

Right now, we’re focusing on developing a master plan for the West Region Blueway & Trail System and expect it to be finished in 2024. System implementation will take multiple years to complete.

Master Plan goals include:

  • Identifying strategies for strengthening and expanding western Hamilton County’s blueway trail

  • Identifying locations and developing design concepts for four to five canoe/kayak access points along the Great Miami and Whitewater rivers

  • Developing plans for a shared-use trail for walkers, runners, hikers, bicyclists, and others to enjoy that follows the Great Miami River corridor

  • Identifying opportunities to weave water and land trails together to strengthen recreational experiences in our region

Other opportunities being explored include:

  • Finding opportunities to create education space

  • Adding connections to nearby points of interest

  • Identifying locations for additional corridor amenities

  • Promoting the history and culture of the corridors

  • Identifying possible habitat restoration opportunities
